Where to Stay for Bran Castle: Brasov or Bran?

Stay in Brasov's old town for restaurants, trains and both castles; stay in Bran village for the castle at 9:00 and Halloween night. A map and the trade-offs.

Updated October 2026

For most visitors the answer is Brasov’s old town: it is about 28 km from Bran Castle by road, it has the restaurants, the trains to Bucharest and the day trips to both castles, and it is a sight in its own right. Stay in Bran village instead if you want to be at the castle gate at 9:00 before the coaches, or if you are going to the Halloween party. A Bucharest hotel only makes sense if you are doing Bran as a day trip and flying out of Bucharest.

Staying in Brasov’s old town

Brasov is the Saxon city that built Bran Castle in the first place, and its old town is the reason many people stay longer than planned: the Council Square, the Black Church, the walls and bastions, and the cable car up Tampa hill. It is the hub for everything in the area. Trains from Bucharest Nord take about 2 hours 15 minutes on the InterCity and around 2.5 to 2.75 hours on the InterRegio trains, which also stop at Sinaia for Peles. Buses to Bran leave from the Autogara 2 bus station, run through the day and take about 45 minutes to an hour.

Stay inside the old town or at its edge, walking distance from the Council Square:

From Brasov, the castle day is easy. The day from Brasov with hotel pick-up takes in Bran, Peles, Cantacuzino and the Sinaia Monastery, rated 4.9 from 495 reviews, from $60 in current promotion (usually $67) (checked October 2026). Brasov departures start later and drive far less than the Bucharest ones.

Staying in Bran village

Bran is a strung-out mountain village of guesthouses, pensions and a souvenir market at the castle gate. Its advantage is the morning: the castle opens at 09:00 (12:00 on Mondays), and the day-trip coaches from Bucharest arrive from late morning, so a guest in Bran has the stairs to themselves for an hour. Its other advantage is the night of 31 October, when the Halloween party ends at 04:00 with no transport home.

The disadvantage is everything else: a handful of restaurants, little to do after the castle shuts, and a taxi or bus for Brasov, Rasnov or Peles. One night is plenty.

Staying in Bucharest for a day trip

If Bran is a single day out of a Bucharest city break, stay in Bucharest and let the tour do the driving. Most day trips collect early in the morning from central points such as Piata Romana, Piata Victoriei, Piata Unirii and University Square, and return in the evening. Stay near one of them so the early start is a short walk.

Bucharest also has free walking tours, which make a good first afternoon before an early castle day: see the free walking tours in Bucharest. Booking is free and guides work for tips.

So where should you stay?

  • Two or more nights in Transylvania: Brasov old town, and do Bran and Peles from there.
  • You want the castle without the crowds, or the Halloween party: one night in Bran village.
  • One day only, flying from Bucharest: stay in Bucharest and book a day trip from Bucharest.
