Bran Castle from Bucharest: Tour, Train or Car
Dracula's Castle is about 200 km from Bucharest. A day tour is the easy way; the train to Brasov plus a bus works for Bran alone. Times, traffic and costs (Oct 2026).
Bran Castle is about 200 km from central Bucharest by road, through Ploiesti, the Prahova Valley and Brasov, and a day tour is the simplest way to do it: a coach or minivan leaves central Bucharest early in the morning and is back in the evening, with Peles or Cantacuzino and Brasov on the way. The train to Brasov and a local bus works if you only want Bran. Driving yourself works if you start early and avoid Friday and Sunday afternoons on the DN1.
The tour we would pick is the day trip to Bran, Peles, Cantacuzino and Brasov, rated 5.0 from 1,293 reviews, from $31 in current promotion (usually $62) (checked October 2026).

How far is Dracula’s Castle from Bucharest?
About 200 km by the usual road, and three to four hours each way. Our measurement along the road gives 198.5 km from Piata Romana to the castle by way of Ploiesti, Sinaia, Busteni, Predeal, Brasov and Rasnov, and about 170 km to Brasov alone. Route planners quote around 2 hours 40 minutes for the drive with empty roads; the roads are rarely empty.
The slow part is the DN1 through the Prahova Valley, a single main road between Comarnic and Brasov that carries both the mountain resort traffic and the trucks. The motorway (A3) is open only as far as Ploiesti in the south; the mountain section from Comarnic to Brasov has not been built. A short Comarnic bypass opened on 1 October 2026, which helps at that one town and nowhere else. Romanian news reports through 2026 describe queues of several kilometres between Comarnic and Busteni on Friday afternoons, Sunday afternoons and holiday weekends.
Option 1: a day tour from Bucharest
Best for: one day, two or three sights, and no driving. This is how most visitors do it, and the market is deep: GetYourGuide lists more than 70 day trips from Bucharest into this part of the Carpathians.
What the day usually looks like:
- An early pick-up at one of a dozen central points (Piata Romana, Piata Victoriei, Piata Unirii, University Square or the big hotels), then about two hours north on the A3 and the DN1 to Sinaia.
- Peles Castle in Sinaia, and on some tours Cantacuzino Castle in Busteni 15 minutes on, an hour or more each.
- Bran Castle, about 40 minutes beyond, for 1 to 1.5 hours with the market at the gate.
- Brasov’s old town, the Council Square and the Black Church, for about 1.5 hours and lunch (some tours do Brasov before Bran).
- Back in Bucharest in the evening, about three hours south; later on a Sunday.
Three things to check before you book. Whether the castle tickets are included (on most tours they are not, and they add about 200 lei for Bran and Peles, see tickets and opening hours). The day of the week: Peles is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and from 2 November to 1 December 2026, and Bran opens at noon on Mondays. And the group size: most of these days run by coach, which means more waiting at each stop; the top pick also sells minivan and private options.
Which day tour?
Book whichever fits your group:
Bran, Peles, Cantacuzino and Brasov
Three castles and Brasov in one day, with the Wednesday filming castle as the extra stop. The default pick.

With children: the top pick is not suitable for under-18s; the coach day with a guided Brasov walk ($29 in current promotion (usually $59), 4.8 from 1,030 reviews, checked October 2026) has no age limit.
Option 2: the train to Brasov, then the bus to Bran
Best for: Bran on its own, a low budget, or a night in Brasov. There is no train to Bran. Take a train from Bucharest Nord to Brasov, then a bus or taxi for the last 28 km.
- Bucharest Nord to Brasov: InterCity trains take about 2 hours 15 minutes and do not stop at Sinaia. InterRegio trains take about 2.5 to 2.75 hours and stop at Sinaia (for Peles), Busteni and Predeal. Slower Regio trains take over three hours. Book on CFR Calatori’s website or at the station.
- Brasov to Bran: buses leave from the Autogara 2 bus station through the day and take about 45 minutes to an hour; timetable listings disagree on frequency and fare, so check at the station. A taxi is quicker and costs more.
The honest limit: by public transport, Bran and Peles in one day from Bucharest is not realistic. Peles’s last entry is 16:00 and Bran’s is 18:00 or 19:00, and the bus links between them run through Brasov. If you want both by train, stay a night in Brasov (where to stay).
Option 3: drive yourself
Best for: a family or a group of four, and flexible timing. A hire car splits the cost four ways and lets you stop where you like: Sinaia, Busteni, Rasnov’s citadel, the viewpoints over the Bran pass.
The catch is the DN1. Leave Bucharest before 7:00, do the castles in the reverse order of the tours (Bran first, Peles on the way home) to dodge the coaches, and never come back south on a Sunday afternoon if you can help it.
Tour, train or car?
- One day, first visit, no car: a day tour. It is the only way to fit Bran, Peles and Brasov in one day without driving.
- Bran only, on a budget, or two days in Brasov: the train and the bus.
- Four people, a hire car and an early start: drive, in reverse order to the coaches.
How these facts were checked
The distances were measured along the road with our own route tool (Bucharest Piata Romana to Bran Castle 198.5 km; to Brasov about 170 km). The status of the A3, the Comarnic bypass (opened 1 October 2026) and the DN1 queue reports come from Romanian news reporting in 2026 (Profit.ro, Newsweek Romania, Stirile ProTV). Train journey times are from the Bucharest-Brasov timetable valid to December 2026. Castle hours and closures are from bran-castle.com and peles.ro, read 26 October 2026. Tour prices, ratings, review counts and the count of more than 70 day trips are from GetYourGuide, checked October 2026.
