How a Bran Castle Day Trip Works
An early start, two hours north, four stops, and back in Bucharest by evening.
Pick a Day Peles Is Open
Peles Castle closes every Monday and Tuesday, and from 2 November to 1 December 2026; Bran opens at noon on Mondays (peles.ro and bran-castle.com, checked October 2026). On those days you see Peles from the outside and the gardens, and Cantacuzino is on this tour either way.
An Early Start in Bucharest
Pick-up is early at one of a dozen central points in Bucharest, and the drive north on the A3 and the DN1 to Sinaia takes about two hours. The valley road is the slow part of the day. The tour is for adults: it is not suitable for under-18s.
Three Castles, Tickets on the Day
Peles and Cantacuzino in the morning, then Bran Castle. Castle entrances are usually paid on the day: 100 lei for an adult at Bran and at Peles, 85 lei at Cantacuzino (official sites, October 2026).
Brasov's Old Town, Then Home
The afternoon is Brasov: the Council Square, the Black Church and a late lunch, before the drive back to Bucharest in the evening.

The Guide
Touring Bran Castle: What the Day Is Really Like
Two hundred kilometres each way, three castles, one old town, and a legend that is mostly marketing. Here is how to do it well.
A Bran Castle tour is, in practice, a day out of Bucharest. Dracula’s Castle sits on a rock above the village of Bran, about 200 km north of the capital by road, and nearly everyone who goes does it as a guided day trip that adds Peles Castle (or Cantacuzino) and the old town of Brasov. It is a long day, roughly twelve hours, and it is a good one, provided you know three things before you book: what the tour price does not include, which days Peles is shut, and what Bran Castle actually is.

Where things stand (late October 2026)
This week is Halloween week at Bran, and from 24 October to 1 November the castle sells only Halloween tickets: themed day tours from 100 lei, 300 lei on 31 October, and the night party from 800 lei (bran-castle.com, read 26 October 2026). The Halloween guide has the programme.
From 2 November the castle returns to its normal tickets and winter hours, 09:00 to 18:00, from 12:00 on Mondays. Peles Castle, the usual second stop, is closed from 2 November to 1 December 2026 for conservation, and it is shut every Monday and Tuesday (peles.ro). Day trips keep running through November: on the Peles stop they show you the outside and the gardens, and several listings swap in Pelisor, the smaller castle next door, which reopens on 4 November.
That is why the tour at the top of this page is the one we would book now. It is the day trip to Bran, Peles, Cantacuzino and Brasov, from $31 in current promotion (usually $62), rated 5.0 from 1,293 reviews (checked October 2026), and it carries Cantacuzino anyway, so a Peles closure still leaves you two castle interiors. Like nearly every Bran tour, it does not include the castle tickets.

What the day looks like
Pick-up is early, at one of a dozen central points in Bucharest. The first two hours or so are the drive north: motorway to Ploiesti, then the DN1 up the Prahova Valley, the single slow road into the mountains that is the reason this is a full day. The morning castle is Peles in Sinaia, the carved-wood palace King Carol I finished in 1883, or Cantacuzino in Busteni, whose terraces played Nevermore Academy in Netflix’s Wednesday. Bran comes at midday, about an hour inside plus the market at its gate. The afternoon is Brasov: the Council Square, the Black Church, a late lunch. You are back in Bucharest in the evening, later on a Sunday.
Peles, Bran and Brasov in one day sets out the timings and the order, and Bran Castle from Bucharest compares the tour with the train and with driving yourself.
What it really costs
The tour price is the transport and the guide. On most Bucharest day trips the castle entrances are extra, paid on the day, and they are not small:
| Castle | Adult ticket (October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Bran Castle | 100 lei (about €20); add-on rooms 30 lei each |
| Peles Castle | 100 lei |
| Cantacuzino Castle | 85 lei with the gallery, 65 lei without |
From bran-castle.com, peles.ro and cantacuzinocastle.com, read 26 October 2026.
So the honest comparison is the tour price plus about 200 to 285 lei of tickets. A tour that looks cheap and includes no entrances can cost about the same as a dearer one in the end. The tickets and opening hours guide has the full price list, the add-ons and the Monday rule.
Is it really Dracula’s Castle?
Not in any historical sense. Bran was built by the Saxons of Brasov between 1377 and 1388 as a fortress and customs post on the pass, and in 1920 it became the favourite home of Queen Marie of Romania; her rooms are most of what you walk through. There is no evidence Vlad the Impaler lived there, and Bram Stoker never visited Romania. The castle tells all of this straight, and the real story is the better one. Is Bran Castle worth it? sorts the myth from the history and says when the visit disappoints.
From Bucharest or from Brasov?
If you have only one day, go from Bucharest. If you can spend a night in Transylvania, go from Brasov: the castles are 30 to 50 km away instead of 130 to 200, the day starts later, and Brasov gets an evening instead of a rushed hour. The Dracula Castle tour from Brasov page compares the Brasov departures.
Where to stay
For a night or two, Brasov’s old town is the base: about 28 km from Bran, with the restaurants, the trains to Bucharest and the day trips to both castles. Bran village is for the castle at opening time or the Halloween party. For a single day trip, stay in Bucharest’s Old Town, near the early pick-ups.
Hotels in Brasov old town Guesthouses in Bran Hotels in Bucharest Old Town
The day before the castles, a free walking tour is a good way in: Bucharest and Brasov both have them most days, booked free and paid with a tip to the guide. Free walking tours in Bucharest and in Brasov. The where-to-stay guide weighs the three bases.

- Travelling in November 2026, or on a Monday or Tuesday? Peles is shut; book a tour that names Cantacuzino or another stop, like the top pick above.
- Travelling with children? The top pick is not suitable for under-18s. The coach day with a guided Brasov walk has no age limit, and from Brasov the Bran, bear sanctuary and Rasnov day suits families best.
- Want Peles’s interior above all? Go Wednesday to Sunday, outside 2 November to 1 December 2026.
- Here for the legend? Read the myth and history first, then consider the Halloween night.
- On a tight budget? The coach days from $17 in current promotion (usually $35) are the cheapest seats, but add the gate tickets before you compare.

Bran Castle Tour FAQ
The questions people type before booking a Dracula's Castle day trip, answered in the first sentence and explained in the ones after.
Yes. Bran Castle is a private museum open every day: 09:00 to 19:00 from April to 1 November and 09:00 to 18:00 in winter, opening at 12:00 on Mondays (bran-castle.com, October 2026). A standard adult ticket costs 100 lei. Most visitors from Bucharest go on a guided day trip that adds Peles or Cantacuzino Castle and Brasov; the castle visit itself is self-guided along a one-way route, and guided tours inside are sold by the castle on the hour. See tickets and opening hours.
About 200 km by road, three to four hours each way. We measured 198.5 km along the road from central Bucharest by Ploiesti, Sinaia, Brasov and Rasnov. The slow part is the DN1 through the Prahova Valley, where queues build on Friday and Sunday afternoons, because the mountain motorway from Comarnic to Brasov has not been built. Day trips leave at about 7:00 to 8:00 and return in the evening. Tour, train or car compared.
By guided day trip, by train to Brasov and then a bus, or by car. There is no train to Bran: InterCity trains reach Brasov from Bucharest Nord in about 2 hours 15 minutes, and buses to Bran leave from Brasov's Autogara 2 and take about 45 minutes to an hour. That works for Bran alone; for Bran and Peles in one day from Bucharest, a tour is the only realistic option without a car.
The castle ticket is 100 lei for an adult (about €20), 40 lei for children aged 5 to 17, 60 lei for students and 70 lei for over-65s (bran-castle.com, October 2026). A day trip from Bucharest adds the transport and guide: from about $17 for the lowest coach fare to $31 for the top-rated day with Cantacuzino, both promotional prices at about half the usual fare (GetYourGuide, checked October 2026). Most tours exclude the castle tickets, so budget about 200 lei more for Bran and Peles.
No. There is no evidence that Vlad III ever lived at Bran. The castle was built by the Saxons of Brasov in 1377-1388 as a fortress and customs post, and in 1920 it became Queen Marie of Romania's home. The castle itself says there is no written proof Vlad ever took it; a claim that he was held there in 1462 is disputed, and most historians place that imprisonment in Hungary. Bram Stoker never visited Romania. The myth and the history.
Yes, as part of a day with Peles or Cantacuzino and Brasov, and with the expectation set right. It is a small, steep medieval castle furnished as a 1920s royal home, with a well-made exhibit on the Dracula legend, not a vampire's lair. Allow about an hour inside. It disappoints people who came for horror, and people who arrive at noon on a summer Saturday, when the stairs are queued.
Peles has the more spectacular interior; Bran has the legend and the outline on its rock. Peles is a 19th-century royal palace of carved wood and stained glass; Bran is a fortress made into a home. Most day trips include both. Note that Peles is closed every Monday and Tuesday and from 2 November to 1 December 2026 (peles.ro), when tours show Peles from the outside and some offer Pelisor or Cantacuzino Castle instead.
About an hour inside, an hour and a half with the village market below it. The route is one way and narrow, so a crowded day adds time. Day trips usually allow 1 to 1.5 hours. The Time Tunnel and the Torture Rooms are extra exhibits at 30 lei each if you want to see them.
Usually not, except in the Halloween week and on busy summer weekends. The castle sells daily tickets online and at the gate. From 24 October to 1 November only Halloween tickets are sold, online and in limited numbers. A Fast Pass ticket (170 lei for an adult) adds a priority lane on busy days.
Brasov, about 28 km away by road through Rasnov. It is the best base for a night or two: the old town, the trains to Bucharest and the day trips to Bran and Peles are all there. Bran village itself has guesthouses right below the castle. Where to stay.
On most day trips from Bucharest, no. The tour covers the transport, the driver and the guide, and you pay the castle entrances on the day: 100 lei at Bran, 100 lei at Peles, 65 to 85 lei at Cantacuzino (official sites, October 2026). Read the not-included line of each listing before you compare prices.
